Working environment and context

Our institution is part of PSL University. Located in the heart of Paris, it brings together all areas of knowledge, innovation and creation. Ranked among the top 50 universities in the world, it trains researchers, artists, engineers, entrepreneurs and managers who are aware of their social, individual and collective responsibility in the field of research.

Hosting structure

The Curie Institute Research Center

France’s leading cancer research and treatment centre, Institut Curie unites a renowned research centre and a specialist hospital, fostering close collaboration between scientists, clinicians and healthcare professionals. It offers an environment of excellence where expertise comes together around shared values: care, humanity, openness, collaboration, efficiency, innovation, solidarity and commitment.

Missions

Main tasks

Laboratory

The ATOMIC team “Advanced Therapy in radiation Oncology and Molecular Imaging Characterization” (CNRS UMR9029/Inserm U1353/Université Versailles Saint-Quentin) develops new strategies to increase the therapeutic index of radiotherapy. The team brings together biologists, medical physicists and radiation oncologists.

FLASH radiotherapy, discovered at Institut Curie (Favaudon et al., Science Translational Medicine, 2014), delivers the dose in a fraction of a second. It reduces toxicity to healthy tissue while maintaining anti-tumour efficacy comparable to that of conventional radiotherapy: this is known as the “FLASH effect”.

As part of the FRATHEA institutional project, Institut Curie is developing a new FLASH irradiator using very high-energy electrons (VHEE), designed to reach deep-seated tumours. You will conduct the preclinical studies needed to validate this equipment, working closely with the team’s physicists and radiation oncologists: a rare opportunity to take part, from the very beginning, in the development of an innovative radiotherapy technology.

The position is based at Institut Curie’s Orsay site, at the heart of the Université Paris-Saclay campus, which brings together research teams in radiobiology and medical physics as well as the Institut Curie Proton Therapy Centre.

Main responsibilities

·        Design and implementation of in vivo experiments: plan and carry out irradiation protocols in mouse models to assess the effects of FLASH radiotherapy, in compliance with regulations and animal welfare standards (3Rs principle); contribute to drafting project authorisation applications (APAFiS, the French ethics approval system).

·        Animal care and monitoring:), weighing, substance administration, anaesthesia, monitoring of clinical parameters.

·        Irradiation sessions: prepare, anaesthetise and position animals on the FLASH irradiator, in coordination with the physicists (dosimetry, scheduling of beam time).

·        Biological analyses: collect organs and samples; take part in analyses (histology, immunofluorescence, genotyping, flow cytometry) with other team members.

·        Data analysis and reporting: collect, organise and statistically analyse data; keep the electronic laboratory notebook; present results at team meetings and contribute to publications.

Knowkedge and qualifications expected

Education and skills

-        Master’s degree (MSc) or engineering degree in biology, biotechnology, physiology or life sciences.

-        Significant initial experience in vivo required (final-year internship, work-study programme or previous position); 2 or more years of professional experience is an advantage.

-        Regulatory training in animal experimentation required: French “Applicator” certificate or equivalent (EU Function B); training in “Conceptor (EU Function C, project design) is an advantage and may be funded as part of the position.

-        Proficiency in rodent handling techniques

-        Knowledge of histology, immunofluorescence and molecular biology (PCR, genotyping); experience in flow cytometry is a plus.

-        Basic skills in statistical analysis (GraphPad Prism, R or equivalent).

-        Experience in radiobiology or in an irradiation environment is appreciated.

Personal qualities

-        Scientific rigour, observational skills and critical thinking

-        Strong organisational skills and autonomy

-        Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team (researchers, physicists, PhD students, clinicians)

-        Good writing and communication skills; scientific English (reading articles, discussions in meetings).

What we offer

-        A pioneering project: the preclinical validation of a new FLASH radiotherapy technology.

-        A multidisciplinary biology – physics – clinical environment, on one of Europe’s leading research campuses.

-        Funded training (flow cytometry, statistical analysis, etc.).

-        Recognition of your work, with co-authorship of publications according to your contribution.
