Junior Professor Chair (tenure track position) in “Health and Global Change” (F/M)
60 rue Mazarine 75006 Paris

Working environment and context
Located in the heart of Paris, PSL inspires dialog among and between all areas of knowledge, innovation, and creativity in Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Engineering and the Arts. Selective and committed to equal opportunity, it draws directly from current research to train researchers, entrepreneurs, artists and managers who are aware of their social responsibility, both individual and collective.
With 2,900 researchers, 17,000 students, 140 laboratories and 10 incubators, fab labs and co-working spaces, PSL is a human-scale university. It ranks among the world’s top 50 universities according to the THE (Times Higher Education) and QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) rankings.
Hosting structure
Due to extreme temperatures and weather events, the ongoing climate change is impacting human health by affecting the cardiac, respiratory, endocrine, immune and nervous systems. In addition, the profound changes in the abundance and distribution of biodiversity linked to the anthropization of natural habitats, the increase in agricultural inputs, the presence of invasive species, the acidification of oceans or the melting of ice and permafrost are causing threats to human nutrition and the occurrence of emerging diseases. The issue of health in a context of global change is an eminently important and transdisciplinary research theme, involving epidemiology and public health, climate sciences and biodiversity sciences, not to mention law, economics, sociology and political sciences.
At a time when the University PSL is growing its interest in health-related issues, notably through its participation in the PariSanté Campus initiative, the Biology Department of the École Normale Supérieure is opening a Junior Professor Chair* in health and global change, an emerging field that involves modeling of complex systems and the analysis of large datasets. Applications will be received from March 2023 (see contact emails below) and will be submitted through the Galaxie online application, with a view to taking up the position from December 2023.
Teaching mission
IMaLiS Master’s degree
The recruited person will be able to teach, for example, in the IMaLiS Master’s degree (tracks "Fundamental Biology for Health" or "Ecology and Evolution"), in the "Sustainability Sciences" Bachelor’s degree, and especially in the future interdisciplinary Master for research and action in the face of global change.
She/he will play an important role in the structuring of teaching, but also of research, around global change at PSL, which already brings together various departments of the ENS (notably the Department of Biology, the Department of Geosciences and CERES) as well as the EPHE and Mines Paris. Her/his interest in public health issues will potentially allow her/him to build bridges with departments and laboratories of the humanities and social sciences. Finally, this person could be associated with the QBio initiative of PSL which aims to develop quantitative approaches in biology and health.
Knowledge of French is not mandatory for this position.
Amaury Lambert, Dean of education of the Department of biology.
Research mission
Department of Biology/IBENS, ENS-PSL, Paris
The call is open to all research profiles contributing to the understanding of the effects of environmental changes on health (public health including epidemiology and biostatistics, biology of organisms, biodiversity and ecosystem services, agriculture and food...) or to the means of action to mitigate these effects, or to the pathways of adaptation to global changes in ecosystems, agro-systems or health systems.
The recruited person will benefit from a reduction by 2/3 of teaching load in the phase preceding tenure (tenure will take place between 2026 and 2029) and from a financial support of 200 k€ in total for her/his research.
